Abstract

The own ways of expression for a University of dealing with the society is, among other things, expressed through the forms and spaces of its places. These are always special places where young minds can stimulate the conscience and reflections during the educational process, and where it is possible to affect significantly the activation of participatory and sharing processes in the future citizens. The nature of the experience of living these places, in a more or less long period of their life, marks a critical step in the growth of persons, helping them in developing their sense of belonging (to an institution, to a company, to a place ...). Moreover, it is generally accepted that the tasks of a University are not limited to those of a specialized Institution. The University has also a more general function, which is ethic and moral, and which coincides with the aim of providing a fundamental contribution to the critical or uncritical way in which a social system sees and judges itself: thanks to the cultural elaborations that are defined inside itself, the University contributes to set up the so-called common sense, even in a contradictory way. A full attention to the qualitative conditions of living in a University and to the way of representing itself inside and outside (ways which are conveyed by images, even symbolic, that the University is able to supply) establishes an inescapable fact in the operations of planning and management, an essential sustenance in order to be prosperous and to guarantee a long life in the future. Although many of the cultural and political values of renaissance and faith in the future, which could be attributed to the project of a University till a few years ago, were revealed misunderstood, unrealized or debased in the actual sad situation of a generalized degrowth, the University maintains, even today, the need of presenting itself as an open universe, which is not self-referential and which is a mirror of the city where it is located. This a condition for its survival, placing itself as a solid core of the cultural reference for the world of research and for the conveyance of the common knowledge. Starting from this awareness, and within the limits of an action conducted by the prevailing point of view of the architectural, urban and landscape design, the laboratory headed by Prof. Emanuele Palazzotto faced over the years 2008-2012, the re-arrangement of the role of the urban campus of the University of Palermo and its buildings. The laboratory endorsed an unavoidable and spontaneous interest of teachers and students on the places in which they live and work every day, an interest which is further strengthened by the peculiarities of the campus placed in the urban area of Palermo. The acquisition of awareness on the main problematic issues, on the unresolved spatial tangles and on the possible solutions that have not yet been explored, allowed to form a complex mosaic, which is controlled at different scales and in which every individual piece is always functional to the overall design, despite its autonomy, every one suggesting, describing and representing the latent potentialities of the place itself towards a community that frequents these places but that too often fails to live and to inhabit them completely.

This a condition for its survival, placing itself as a solid core of the cultural reference for the world of research and for the conveyance of the common knowledge. Starting from this awareness, and within the limits of an action conducted by the prevailing point of view of the architectural, urban and landscape design, the laboratory headed by Prof. Emanuele Palazzotto faced over the years 2008-2012, the re-arrangement of the role of the urban campus of the University of Palermo and its buildings. The laboratory endorsed an unavoidable and spontaneous interest of teachers and students on the places in which they live and work every day, an interest which is further strengthened by the peculiarities of the campus placed in the urban area of Palermo.
