N2 - Through the combination of criminological and legal-normative research,and thanks also to the collaboration with external experts(scholars, magistrates, representatives of Italian and foreign institutions), theresearch investigated the interactions between different trafficking and crimeorganized in the Mediterranean basin. In this historically crucial areafor the mobility of persons and goods, attention has been paid in particular to thephenomena of trafficking and smuggling of persons, drug trafficking andof cigarette smuggling.The contributions collected - together with the criminological report and the fivenational reports accessible at www.unipa.it/nesmes.pmi anddedicated to the criminal systems under investigation (Italy, Germany, Spain,Portugal, Greece) - intend to provide an in-depth and varied viewof the theme studied: socio-criminological analysis and reflection coexist in it.legal (this, in turn, is both substantive and procedural),the study of the Italian standards and their placement in a morebroad (European, international, but also comparative), the point of viewof the scholar and the magistrate. It emerges the idea that, among the three types oftraffic considered, there may be pragmatic and structural relationships to which thestates should devote more attention, with a view to more contrastfair and effective, as part of a balance between mobility and safetyappropriate to the relevance of the Mediterranean area at European level, andinternational.
