Abstract

The paperpresentstheresultsofanenergyandenvironmentalassessmentofasetofretrofitactionsimplementedintheframeworkoftheEUProject‘‘BRITAinPuBs’’(BringingRetrofitInnovationtoApplicationinPublicBuildings–no:TREN/04/FP6EN/S07.31038/503135).Outcomesarisefromalifecycle approachfocusedonthefollowingissues:(i)constructionmaterialsandcomponentsusedduringretrofits; (ii)maincomponentsofconventionalandrenewableenergysystems;(iii)impactsrelatedtothe buildingconstruction,forthedifferentelementsandthewholebuilding.The resultsarepresentedaccordingtothedataformatoftheEnvironmentalProductDeclaration.Syntheticindices,asenergyandGWPpaybacktimes,andenergyreturnratio,aredefinedtobetterdescribetheenergyandenvironmentalperformancesoftheactions.The projecthighlightstheroleofthelifecycleapproachforselectingthemosteffectiveoptionsduringthe designandimplementationofretrofitactions.
