Abstract
The local economies in Sicily are highly granular territory from the spatial, economic and social point of view. In the context of local development, the llocal metrics measured on the structure of the companies present in the municipalities of the island have shown in a few combinations that do not always faithfully reflect the hierarchy of the metropolitan areas of Palermo, Catania and Messina. The S3 strategy opens a new vision where "places" still don't take on a central value as they should. The introduction of the quintuple helix with the inclusion of the environment, in addition to the actors of civil society, businesses, universities, and the public sector is a strategic variable for Sicilian municipalities. Indeed, the European Commission7 has identified the socio-ecological transition as one of theThe economic domains of the Smart Specialization Strategy (RIS3) for Sicily (Reworking on Sicilian Region data) main challenges for European companies.
