Abstract
The essay is focused on the relevance of destruction for architecture. Destruction, is intended as an act, as a notion, as a procedure as an idea. Distruction is view firstly with its being a mere circumstance, an ordinary happening ina broad sense. Its presence in contemporary culture is also scrutinized. Secondly it is viewed as an aesthetic category, that has appeared in many moments in art. Piranesi, the many 17th "ruinists" as well as modern artist such as Burri, Metzer, Matta-Clark are looked at. In the second part the essay considers the compelling relation/opposition that undermines every architectural act: destruction/construction.
