Abstract

Within a more general study on marinesediments in the Gulf of Palermo (Sicily, Italy),the 210Pbex dating method (using a model withconstant sedimentation rate) has been applied toone sediment core. The main goal of the researchwas to study the Pb pollution chronology. Datingof the core has allowed evaluating the timeevolution of the gulf lead concentrations. Specificactivities of 137Cs have also been measured in thesediment core sections as an independent confirmationof the chronology derived by the 210Pbexmethod. The time scale has then been used tocorrelate lead concentrations in core sections toestimated lead emissions in air due to gasolinecombustion. A good correlation between the twodata series has been obtained.
