Abstract

The recentlargeinterestinnonlinearseismicanalysismethods,staticanddynamic,hasrequiredproperstrategiesofmodelingbasedonreliable,andatthesametimeeasytouse,constitutivelawsforthestructural elements.Regardingthebehaviorofframedstructures,specialattentionhastobedevotedtoinfills becauseofthekeyroletheyplayinmodifyingoverallstiffness,strengthandductilityunderseismic excitation.Pointingouttheattentiononthistopicthepaperdiscussesacriteriaformodelingthestructural behaviorofinfills basedonamacromodelingapproach,thatistosayonthesubstitutionofinfills withdiagonalpinjointedstruts.Ishereshownhowmultilinearplasticlinkelementsgovernedby ahystereticPivotmodel,availableindifferentFEMcodes,canbeappropriatelyusedtomodeltheequivalentstrutstoperformlinearornonlinearanalyses.Inordertoenlargeexperimentalknowledgeoncyclicbehaviorofinfilled framesstructuresandasreferencefordevelopingtheabovementionedmodelingstrategy,anexperimentalcampaignonsingle-storey,single-bay,fullyinfilledframeswithdifferentkindsofmasonryandsubjectedtolateralcyclicalloads,wascarriedout,andsomeothersavailableintheliteraturearereferredto.ValidationofPivotmodeling approachwascarriedoutcomparingexperimentalresultsandcomputersimulationsoftheexperimentaltests.InthepaperhysteresisparametersvaluescalibratingPivotlawarealsogivenforinvolvedmasonryinfills typologiesandsomeproposalsforcorrelationbetweenstrengthandstiffnessofinfilledframesandofmasonryinfillsareprovidedasatoolforthequickcalibrationofthePivotmodelinpracticalapplications.
