The paper studies the rhetorics of the continental identities. It shows that the mythical original kinship in some cases generated bonds of solidarity between peoples occupying specific geographical areas, while in other cases it was used to justify imperialist claims. It also shows that the boundaries between the continents are represented, depending on whether the point of view is defensive or aggressive, either as aspects of a natural 'architecture' that must be preserved, or as obstacles to overcome for the love of knowledge that wants to explore the unknown, for the domestication of the wild or for the spread of civilization.
