Our paper aims at reﬂecting upon the mediation role that linguistics couldplay concerning the relationship between language policies and concretespeakers’ discourse practices. The paper is divided into two parts. Theﬁrst one focuses on the concept of «identity» within Linguistics throughout20th century. The second part deals with some possible models which maybe employed in order to represent the construction of speakers’ identity asit may be observed within the interviews of the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily(ALS).
