Comparing indoor performances of a building equipped with four different roof configurations in 65 Italian sites

Abstract

Abstract—Despite the increasing concern of institutions andtechnical organizations toward the improvement of thebuilding energy (and, therefore, environmental) efficiency, themain goal of technicians should be also devoted toward thelevels of internal thermal comfort that buildings are able torealize. As that, the relationships between energy performancesand comfort conditions provided by the enclosures are ofparamount importance in guiding designers in their work. Inthis paper, the influence of diverse roof construction typologieson energy and indoor performance of buildings has beeninvestigated, in different Italian sites during heating andcooling seasons. In addition, it must be properly consideredthat buildings operate in given climate and weather contextsthat deeply affect their performances. Hence, for taking intoaccount the different weather conditions of each site, a newparameter has been used, that is the “Climatic Severity Index”corresponding to a value of magnitude of a climatic vector lessa constant value, recently released by an Italian technicalstandard. The actions for improving the energy efficiencysometimes lead to a reduction of indoor comfort, therefore, notalways easily applicable.
