Abstract

The evaluation by cardiovascular imaging of chemotherapypatients became a central topic in the last several years. Theuse of drugs for the treatment of cancers increased, andnew molecules and protocols were developed to improveoutcomes in these patients. Although, these novelapproaches also produced a progressive increase in sideeffects, particularly myocardial dysfunction. Imaging of theheart was highly accurate in the early diagnosis of cancertherapeutics related-cardiac dysfunction.Echocardiography is the first-line method to assessventricular function alterations, and it is required to satisfythe need for an early, easy and accurate diagnosis to stratifythe risk of heart failure and manage treatments. A carefulmonitoring of cardiac function during the course of therapyshould prevent the onset of severe heart impairment. Thisreview provides an overview of the most important findingsof the role of echocardiography in the management ofchemotherapy-treated patients to create a clear andcomplete description of the efficacy of conventionalmeasurements, the importance of comprehensive heartevaluations, the additional role of new echocardiographictechniques, the utility of integrated studies using otherimaging tools and the positions of the most importantinternational societies on this topic.
