This chapter aims to examine the recent trend of the Italian credit market and the expected impacts of the new accounting and supervisory regulation in bank lending practices and structures. The main aim is to identify the relevant regulatory, accounting, and market drivers which lead to substantial changes in bank lending and, in a wider perspective, in the economics and management of banking firms. The first part of the chapter analyses the evolution of the Italian credit market, with particular attention to the non-performing loans management. The second part examines the impacts of the new accounting and regulatory rules on the credit market, as well as the disintermediation processes that challenge the economics of banking.
