Abstract
The paper focuses on those scholars and international institutions that have contributed to the construction of the theory and practice of evaluation in Italy; on pilot projects that prepared the evaluation of Italian schools; on the legislation supporting the first national assessment of the Italian school system in from 2014 to 2017; on the CIPP model adopted for the school asset evaluation in Italy; on the phases of the first evaluation process of Italian schools; on the social balance of a school, and on the way to improve the school evaluation process.
