In the 1970s and 1980s, the identity of the Italian design industry came to be inextricablyintertwined with the ‘Made in Italy’ label, which not only states the geographical origin of productsbut is also associated with high quality design and innovation, and unparalleled excellence.Against this backdrop, continual experimentation took place in many organizations with ties todesign throughout Italy and in every sector with links to design, production, and research intotechnology and new materials. Alchimia and Memphis were part of this scene. They reinventeddesign, gave new value to elements such as colour and decoration, and built up new vocabulary.
