This paper presents a methodology to acquire newknowledge in TutorJ using external informationsources. TutorJ is an ITS whose architecture is inspiredto the HIPM cognitive model, while meta-cognitionprinciples have been used to design the knowledge acquisitionprocess. The system behavior is intended toincrease its own knowledge as a consequence of theinteraction with users. The implemented methodologyuses external links and services to capture newknowledge from contents related to discussion topicsand transforms these contents into structured knowledgethat is stored inside an ontology. The purposeof the proposed methodology is to lower the effort ofsystem scaffolding creation and to increase the level ofinteraction with users. The focus is on self-regulatedlearners while meta-cognitive strategies have to bee definedto adapt and to increase the effectiveness of tutoringactions.
