Abstract

An initial intuition or a subject based on a strong tradition of studies, from which the incipit of the research programme results, can become less important as regards the other cultural and scientific interests, imposed, in the meantime, with urgency. The subject, identified by Luigi Ramazzotti, as the coordinator of the Prin 2009, underwent alterations. Passing the months, the general theme with the title “From theurbanized countryside to the town in extension: the constituent architecture rules of the territory of smaller centres”, aroused a rising interest. So, arguing about the relationship between the built and the countryside, as you can deduce immediately from the title of the Prin, in years when there are a lot of slogans against the consumption of the soil, has analyzed an unsolved and present question. The cogency of the theme is based on the far-seeing piece of writing by Giuseppe Samonà in 1976, “The town in extension”, considered the scientific foundation of a general reflection, and on other recent reflections. There are a lot of publications about the interaction between the town and the countryside but there are some common ideas.Among these ideas the documentary by Michele Mellara and Alessandro Rossi, “God save the green”. The narration by Mellara and Rossi deals with the atavic need of cultivating the land, it is characteristic of the man even if, following the urban migration flow, he moved to the town. This condition is, maybe, more evident when the number of citizens exceeded that of the inhabitants of the countryside.Exceeding this threshold, in favour of the town, was followed by the phenomenon of the urban countrysides, deeply different in connection with different geographic conditions and the urban areas. The emerging of the countryside in town, in opposition to the dispersion of the built and the weak urban margins, incite to investigate the mixing between the town and the countryside, analyzing better above all the territories neighbouring some smaller centres in the South – Centre Italy. The research unit of the Faculty of Architecture of Palermo has chosen a part of the North area of Sicily as the scope of the research; it is on the West of Conca d'Oro, extending from Isola delle Femmine to Partinico, including Falcone and Borsellino airport. The reasons of this choice will explain later but in this introduction we would like to advance another reason, partially omitted in two years of research.
