A Battery-free Asset Monitoring System based on RF Wireless Power Transfer

In the Internet of Things (IoT) era, asset monitoring represents an appealing implementation of Wireless SensorNetworks due to the enormous benefits associated with beingable to monitor and record the exact position and transportationconditions of assets, personal objects, and the like. This kindof infrastructure enables the provision of increasingly advancedservices, including the ability to measure the movement speed ofa monitored asset using relatively inexpensive nodes with sensingcapabilities and wireless transmission and reception. These nodeswould ideally employ battery-free sensors that do not requireany maintenance, but conventional power supply managementsystems cannot satisfy this requirement. In response to theheightening demand and interest surrounding Battery-free tags,this article proposes a system inside a Wireless Sensor Networkinfrastructure that uses battery-free tags to identify an assetand monitor its speed. The battery-free tags are powered byRF energy through Wireless Power Transfer, and the speed ofan asset proceeding at constant speed is achieved by measuringthe time that the tag takes to traverse a series of hot-spotsinterspersed at specific distances. Our discussion shall includethe performance characteristics and key features of a system onchip (SoC) specifically designed to power a node through RFWPT. The outcome is a strategy and a model for designing theinfrastructure by providing the optimum number of hot-spotsneeded to perform the identification of an asset and measureits speed. Validation of the model has been performed throughspecific tests and experimental results have been provided.
