The ATHENA mission (ESA Cosmic Vision Large mission scheduled for launch in 2028) is targeting to offer X-ray spectroscopy capabilities far beyond of any existing or approved future mission. Both of the selected highly sensitive X-ray instruments including Wide Field Imager and X-ray Integral Field Unit are sensitive to photon energies outside the specified operation range 0.2 keV - 15 keV. Reduction of heat load from warmer surfaces is also mandatory. Therefore, both instruments need to be equipped with optical blocking filters. Due to the required mission capability the requirements for the filters are challenging and a completely new type of filters need to developed. Selecting, designing and manufacturing optimal filters meeting the requirements are not straightforward tasks and a serious amount of development efforts are needed. In this proposal, we present our concept to offer suitable filter technology for ATHENA mission. There are clear technical risks and challenges before reaching the target. Still, we are confident that we can offer high performing European filter solutions which can be utilised in the space in the end of the day.
