Abstract

The traditional interpretation of the designation son poitevin (or chanson poitevine), which appears in some French literary texts and manuscripts of the central Middle Ages, as a ‘lyric poem in the Occitan language’ is contradicted by the rubric of an undeniably French love song (RS 1208) transcribed in ms. Paris, BnF, fr. 12786. The discussion of all the known occurrences of the designation leads to the hypothesis that it should not be understood only in connection with the language of the poem but also with its musical typology, namely the ‘oda continua’, a form that does not imply melodic repetitions in the initial part of the stanza and is characteristic of the troubadour repertoire since the middle of the 12th century, while it is infrequent in the trouvère repertoire.
