A wetland habitat assessment technique (H.A.T.) has been used to screening 16 wetlands of Sicily. H.A.T. uses breeding birds and wintering Anatidae as indicators of habitat quality. Faunal index values are greater for the natural areas using breeding birds. Faunal index value differences between natural and artificial areas are not so evident using wintering Anatidae.
