N2 - Even though architectural heritage might appear immutable, it is changing constantly, occasionally swiftly, more often gradually. The only way of passing our her-itage to future generations is by handling this transformation with adequate knowledge and tools for managing this process. In order for this to be rendered feasible we need to establish the basics for a dialogue between past, present and future, removing the absence of time variable that dominated the world of architecture for the best part of the last century (also with regard to the architectural heritage). In the case of product innovation, this dialogue must find a balance between the advantages of the new and the risks of the future; in the case of process innovation (which does not achieve any tangible effects) the contribution of the present generation should be even more significant and effective in pursuit of the goal of reliable and sustainable conservation.
