The essay offers an overview of the experience of exile of a group of Germanand Austrian female writers (Adrienne Thomas, Irmgard Keun, Victoria Wolff, GinaKaus and Vicki Baum), who had been a symbol of the so–called Neue Frau in theTwenties and emigrated after the rise of National Socialism. From an autobiographicalpoint of view the reconstruction of their experience of exile, which sometimesinclude common stations (Vienna, Paris, the crossing of the Atlantic, Hollywood and,in some cases, the return to Europe), allows to compare their careers and to find outbreaks and possible lines of continuity in the process of their literary affirmation andsocial emancipation which had begun in the Weimar Republic.
