This paper describes the area that is usually called "Ladinia dolomitica" , focusing on the language that is spoken in this area, Dolomitic Ladin (traditionally considered as part of Rhaeto-romance). The paper discusses the history of the area and of the development of Ladin, and then it lists the phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical features of Ladin that make it unique within the varieties of Northern Italy. Subsequently, it describes the peculiarities of the individual Ladin dialects, which are spoken each in a different valley of the Dolomites. This paper is highly innovative and original, because it allows the reader to listen to the audio files that exemplify the features discussed in the text.
