A long reflection on the meaning of accessibility opens the essay, starting from the etymology of the word, following up on its evolution and consequential institutional recognition, proceeding with the developments that are the foundation of two main fields, one in the material context of the physical sphere and the other in the intangible context of the cultural sphere. The latter is the subject investigated and reevaluated through the principles of the communication design discipline. If we can associate the idea of threshold to the concept of physical accessibility, implying the passing of any kind of barriers , limits and obstacles hence allowing the dissolution of the solution of continuity between the parts, in equal measure, but with a different meaning, cultural accessibility introduces some other types of thresholds that enable the connection of invisible content and intangible components with graphical systems designed and obtained by composition of shapes, typography, pictograms, colours, that let us witness an overlap between the concept of accessibility and those of clarity and readability. Graphical systems that can’t be obtained simply by sticking to ministerial guidelines, but that require, in order, specific skills, knowledge and translation of cultural content, approach to a new design everyday more systemic and truly inclusive.
