The text reinterprets the evolution of the iconography of S. Rosalia, patron saint of Palermo starting from the first official portrait wanted by the Senate of Palermo in 1624.Taking up a well-known quarrel apparently triggered by the nuns of the order of St. Basil, who claimed that the Patroness had part of their ranks.In reality, as explained in the essay, the dispute was supported by the Jesuits, together with the Benedictines, in an anti-Franciscan function, considering that the first images of the Santuzza portrayed her with the brown habit tied with a rope, consequently manifesting the eremitical value in the path of his holiness and inevitably recalling the habit of St. Francis.The contribution therefore traces the review of the first images of St. Rosalia, also through direct and indirect sources, advancing for the first time the hypothesis that in reality the cause triggering the iconographic conflict was due to the Dominicans who used the famous altarpiece with the Madonna del Rosario in S. Domenico by Antoon van Dyck, until today not considered in the context of the question that involved renowned painters, the result of acute commissions, including Carlo Maratti and Paolo De Matteis, a century after the Vandyckian image .
