La memoria bruciata. L'Archivio dell'Ospedale Grande di Palermo

Abstract

On April 18, 1593 a fire of probable artifacts struck the archive of the Great and New Hospital of Palermo, located on the ground floor of the Sclafani palace. In the following decades, the archives were repeatedly reorganized, but suffered further deterioration due to war events, transfers, lack of conservation. To reconstruct the history of the great and new Hospital of Palermo, we have available discontinuous documentation, guarded by different bodies in different places. The first chapters of the hospital (1431) for example, were kept by the institution where they were registered, the Curia of the Praetor of Palermo, where they are still available today. An archive ultimately, that of the great and new Hospital of Palermo, not concentrated in one place but rather a widespread archive.
