The issue of non-performing loans has increased its strategic importance in the economics of banking, financial industry, firms, households, national and international regulators and supervisors. Banks have received many pressures to better manage the non-performing loans in their balance sheets, in an attempt to preserve the stability of banking system and credit supply to economic activity. The topic can be analyzed by many perspectives. The aim of the present paper is to examine some critical issues of the banks’ NPL management in Italy, with particular reference to some institutional, regulatory and economic aspects, and to pose some research questions.
