Two Centuripe vases in Palermo were analyzed using complementary portable XRF and Total Reflectance FTIRspectroscopies. The analyses allow to clarify the palette and the technique of decoration (tempera painting withan organic binder), and show the presence of both ancient and modern pigments (due to some recent repainting). One of the most interesting results was the identification of two phases of the calcium sulfate in the stratum underlyingthe paintings: due to the conditions that make the gypsum transform into bassanite, the presence ofgypsum or alternatively bassanite in each analyzed part can represent a criterium for distinguishing the originalpaintings from the restored/ counterfeit ones.
