During the renovation of Villa Riso, a historic complex located in the Piana dei Colli area (Palermo), a qanat-type underground draining tunnel was found. In this sector of Palermo, the presence of qanat below important historical villas is frequent but often their access is hard because of the poor conservation conditions. The qanat of Villa Riso shows the classic structure of the qanat in the Piana dei Colli, from which, however, it differs for the presence of a large water cistern located in the middle part of the tunnel. The detailed description of the qanat, showing its structure and its conservation conditions, and geological features of the rock in which it carved are displayed in this paper.
