This chapter aims to identify the main determinants that define thearchitectural properties of network emergence and significantly influencethe dynamics underlying network evolution in time. The identification andanalysis of these determinants, as well as the dynamic processes tied tothem, allows to appreciate the competitive bases and consequences ofnetwork morphology. To this purpose, using a complex systemsperspective as an integrative conceptual approach, we represent networksas complex dynamic systems of knowledge and capabilities.We perform acomparative in-depth analysis of the processes underlying the emergenceand evolution of STMicroelectronic’s global network and of Toyota’ssupplier network in the US so as to allow an elucidatory empiricalassessment of the theoretical representation elaborated in the article.
