Abstract
The Dictionnaire de Littérature of Sabatier de Castres (1770) is considered the first work to have made use of the syntagm "dictionary of literature". The innovative aspect of this works is, however, rather limited because of its didascalic intent, a trait reminiscent of another of Sabatier's dictionaries: the Dictionnaire des Passions, des Vertus et des Vices (1769). We will examine how it remains nevertheless an interesting example of the encyclopedic movement wherein it was ultimately classified.
