Abstract

[automatically translated] The measure of the values assumed by the geometric parameters of the track and the state of wear of the rails, for several years now is carried out with high efficiency and laser techniques with diagnostic trains (such as the Archimedes and Thales trains for ordinary railways). This paper describes a new procedure for estimating the wear of the transverse profile of tram rails in operation by image processing technique; this methodological approach is based on the "information" contained in the photographic images with high resolution of the rails and on specific algorithms which allow to obtain the exact geometric profile of the rails themselves and then to be able to measure the wear of their extrados and, more particularly , the running surface. The analysis and the results presented in the study are related to research carried out in the laboratory with mono and stereoscopic techniques performed on the tram rails cross sections from lines already in operation. Thanks to their specific peculiarities and to the high precision in the wear estimation and the speed of analysis, the two techniques are suitable to be used in power, both for analysis in the laboratory (where they are simple to apply the monoscopic techniques), both for high yield reliefs in situ by the installation of suitable equipment on diagnostic rolling stock (suitably equipped stereoscopic techniques), optionally in combination with the methods of auscultation of the binary traditionally used in the railway sector.
