In this essay I focus on the period of formation of Radcliffe-Brown's ideas on the relationships between field research, purposeethnography and the theoretical perspective of anthropology. At the end ofthis period, which begins in 1906, the year in which his research beganon the field in the Andaman Islands and ends in 1922-23 with the publication of the monograph resulting from this research (Radcliffe-Brown, 1922) andof the famous speech on the methods of ethnology and social anthropology(Radcliffe-Brown, 1923), his positions on these relationships appear substantially delineated.
