Abstract

Acute gastroenterologic vascular emergenciesare common situations in emergencydepartments and the clinical consequencesrange from trivial to life-threatening. Onlythe early recognition of these symptom patternsand prompt use of the appropriate diagnostictools lead to a correct diagnosis withsubsequent potentially life-saving treatment. To decrease the high mortality rate of acutemesenteric ischemia (50%), aorto-enteric fistula(30–40%), visceral artery aneurysms (10–100%) and Budd-Chiari syndrome new strategieswith an endovascular approach are gainingimportance and are partially replacing establisheddiagnostic and therapeutic algorithms. This article provides a review of thediagnosis and therapy of these gastroenterologicemergency situations.
