The nature of tourism and the spheres of activity relevant tomanaging it are changing both in character and in scope. A “territorialspace”, which is not defined simply by geographicalboundaries, but also by physical and intangible as well as actual and virtual boundaries is offered as a framework within whichto conceptualize and approach planning and managing tourismin the newly evolved reality, and the BSC is as an effective toolfor facilitating the implementation of a new approach in evaluatingand studying the impacts of tourism. The “territory” conceptcould serve well as an organizing principle in this researchand the Italian experiment on tourism districts will provide anideal setting for applying and testing the usefulness of the ProactiveBalanced Scorecard to tourism.
